First Communion


At St. George Catholic Church, we rejoice with families as their children prepare to receive First Holy Communion. This sacrament is a profound milestone in the life of faithnot only for the child, but for the entire family.


Holy Communion is not simply a ceremony or a graduation from religious education. It is a deepening of a child’s relationship with Jesus Christ and a fuller participation in the life of the Church.



What Is Holy Communion?


The Church teaches:


“Holy Communion augments our union with Christ. The principal fruit of receiving the Eucharist in Holy Communion is an intimate union with Christ Jesus.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1391)


In the Eucharist, Jesus gives us His Body and Blood, truly present under the appearance of bread and wine. This is not a symbol, but a sacred mystery in which Christ nourishes us, strengthens us, and unites us more deeply to Himself and to one another.


The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life, and Sunday Mass is at the heart of who we are as Catholics.



Holy Communion Is a Sacrament of Faith


To receive Holy Communion, a child must be capable of recognizing the difference between ordinary bread and the Body of Christ, and approach the sacrament with reverence and faith.


This faith is learned and formed over time most powerfully through example. Children learn what the Eucharist means by watching how their parents and families treat Sunday Mass, prayer, and the life of the Church.


Faith formation does not begin or end in the classroom. It is lived within the community of believers and nurtured first in the home.



A Sacred Responsibility


By preparing your child for First Holy Communion, you are accepting a sacred responsibility as parents and guardians.


  1. To raise your child in the Catholic faith means continuing to make
  2. Sunday Mass a priority, teaching your child that receiving the Eucharist is not optional, but central to our life with Christ.
  3. It also means fostering a habit of daily prayer, helping your child speak to God and listen for Him in their lives.
  4. To help your child grow in faith means supporting their formation
  5. Through parish faith formation or Catholic school, helping them understand what they receive in Holy Communion, and guiding them to receive the Eucharist with reverence, gratitude, and love.
  6. To walk with your child in faith means accompanying them as they grow
  7. Answering questions, guiding them through moments of doubt, and continuing to grow in your own faith so your child sees that faith is a lifelong journey, not something we outgrow.


First Holy Communion is a gift given to your child, but it is also a calling for families—to remain rooted in Christ and united to the Church through the Eucharist.



Eligibility


CHILD

  • Child must be at least 7 years old
  • Child must be baptized
  • Child must have completed the required period of faith formation


If your child is older and has not yet received First Holy Communion, please contact the Parish Office to discuss appropriate preparation options.



Parent Requirements


Parents must:

  • Be registered parishioners or
  • reside within St. George parish boundaries
  • Commit to regular Sunday Mass attendance
  • Ensure consistent participation in faith formation
  • Attend required parent meetings or formation sessions
  • Provide all requested sacramental documentation


These expectations help ensure that children are supported in living the faith they are preparing to receive.



Preparation Process


Preparation for First Holy Communion includes:

  • Participation in parish faith formation class on Wednesday and Sacramental Prep on Sunday
  • Instruction on prayer, the Mass, and reception of Holy Communion
  • Ongoing support from parents at home


Faith formation is a partnership between the parish, parents, and the child

Dates and details for First Holy Communion celebrations are provided through the parish faith formation program.


Families will receive information regarding:

  • rehearsal times
  • attire guidelines
  • celebration dates
  • expectations for reverence and participation



Continuing the Journey


First Holy Communion is not the end of formation—it is the beginning of a deeper life with Christ. Families are encouraged to continue:


  • weekly participation in Sunday Mass
  • regular prayer at home
  • ongoing faith formation
  • active involvement in parish life
