Reconciliation

# Sacrament of First Reconciliation

At **St. George Catholic Church**, we are honored to accompany children and families as they prepare for the **Sacrament of First Reconciliation**. This sacrament marks an important step in a child’s spiritual life and helps them experience God’s mercy in a personal and meaningful way.

First Reconciliation is often the first time a child learns that God’s love is stronger than sin and that forgiveness is always possible.

---

## What Is Reconciliation?

The Church teaches:

> *“Those who approach the sacrament of Penance obtain pardon from God’s mercy for the offenses committed against Him, and are, at the same time, reconciled with the Church.”*
> *(Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1422)*

In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we encounter **Jesus Christ as the Divine Physician**—the One who heals, restores, and reconciles us to God and to one another. Through the priest, Christ listens, forgives, and invites us to begin again.

This sacrament is not about fear or punishment. It is about **honesty, healing, and mercy**.

---

## Reconciliation Is a Sacrament of Healing and Conversion

Children preparing for First Reconciliation are learning:

* the difference between right and wrong
* the meaning of sin and personal responsibility
* the importance of saying “I’m sorry” and seeking forgiveness
* that God’s mercy is always available

They are also learning that forgiveness is not just something we ask for—but something we are called to **practice in our daily lives**.

This understanding grows best when children see forgiveness lived out at home.

## A Sacred Responsibility

By preparing your child for First Reconciliation, you are accepting a sacred responsibility as parents and guardians.

To **raise your child in the Catholic faith** means helping them understand that everyone makes mistakes, but God never stops loving us. It means teaching them that forgiveness begins with honesty and humility, not fear.

To **help your child grow in faith** means forming their conscience—helping them recognize their actions, take responsibility, and desire to do better. This includes **regular Sunday Mass attendance**, teaching them the importance of prayer, and helping them reflect on their choices in light of the Gospel.

To **walk with your child in faith** means guiding them gently through this sacrament, helping them prepare without anxiety, and showing them—by your own example—that returning to God is a normal and life-giving part of Christian life.

First Reconciliation is not a one-time event. It introduces your child to a sacrament meant to be received **throughout their life**.
